A. Kegunaan Question Words

Question word dapat digunanakan :

  1. Untuk menanyakan subject baik orang (who) atau benda (what), sebagaimana sudah dijelaskan disini.
  2. Untuk menanyakan selain subject, sebagaimana akan dijelaskan.

B. Jenis-Jenis Question Words

Question word dibagi :

a. Interrogative pronoun

Question word yang dipakai sebagai kata dan tidak diikuti oleh kata benda seperti who, whose, which, whom, what.

  1. What are you doing?
  2. Which is yours?
b. Interrogative adjective

Question word yang dipakai sebagai kata Tanya dan diikuti oleh kata benda seperti what, whose, which, etc.

  1. What advice shall I give you?
  2. Which places do you wish to visit?
c. Question word yang dipakai sebagai kata Tanya dan menunjukkan pada keterangan, seperti where, when, why, how.
  1. When do you come?
  2. How long will you stay at Jakarta?
  3. Where did you go yesterday?

C. Questions words for non subject

Whom, what, what for, with whom, for whom, to whom, for whom, where, when.

1. Whom = siapa, digunakan untuk menanyakan object orang.

VERBAL NOMINAL
She visited her friends two days ago
Whom did she visit two days ago?

2. What = apa, selain digunakan untuk menanyakan subject, juga bisa dipakai untuk menanyakan :

  • Predicate (pekerjaan) dalam kalimat verbal
  • Object benda
  • Predicate (jabatan/pekerjaan) dalam kalimat nominal
VERBAL NOMINAL
1. Predicate

– You slept here yesterday

– What did you do here yesterday?

2. Object

– They read a book just now

– What did they read just now?

Predicate (for occupation)

– He is a tailor

– What is he?

3. What for = untuk apa, digunakan untuk menanyakan kegunaan

: to + VI + O

: for + VI ing + O

: in order that + positive verbal                 sentence

 

(+) : in order to + be + non verb

: to + be + non verb

: for + being + adjective

: for + non verb

: in order that + negative verbal                 sentence

b. Specimen

  • She was remiss to accept an offer
  • What for was she remiss?
  • She qualified for a job
  • What for did she qualify?

4. With whom = dengan siapa, digunakan untuk menanyakan orang yang menyertai, jawabannya :

  • Alone = sendirian
  • By one self = sendirian
  • With + person/pronoun as object = dengan…….
VERBAL NOMINAL
  • She went shopping with him before yesterday
  • With whom did she go shopping before yesterday?
  • He was in Jakarta with his parents last night
  • With whom was he in Jakarta last night?

5. For whom = untuk siapa, digunakan untuk menanyakan kegunaan untuk orang, jawabannya :

  • For + person
  • For + pronoun as object
VERBAL NOMINAL
  • I bought a pen for my self
  • For whom did you buy a pen?
  • My father was in Jepara for my sister
  • For whom was your father in jepara?

6. To whom = kepada siapa, digunakan untuk menanyakan orang yang dituju.

VERBAL NOMINAL
  • I bought a car to him
  • To whom did you buy a car?

7. From whom = dari siapa, digunakan untuk menanyakan orang yang mengirim.

VERBAL NOMINAL
  • She received a letter from her brother
  • From whom did she receive a letter?
  • The package of gift was from him
  • From whom was the package of gift?

8. Where = dimana/kemana, digunakan untuk menanyakan tempat.

VERBAL NOMINAL
  • He went to Mecca last year
  • Where did he go last year?
  • They were at orphanage two years ago
  • Where were they two years ago?

9. When= kapan, digunakan untuk menanyakan waktu.

VERBAL NOMINAL
  • He moderated a meeting three months ago
  • When did he moderate a meeting?
  • A mole was on her face a year ago
  • When was a mole on her face?
